After learning that Hispanic and African American children face a disproportionate risk of being in automobile accidents, Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, and philanthropic automaker Toyota banded together to sponsor a groundbreaking new safety program titled "Buckle Up for Life" to Houston, Texas.
So, why focus on seatbelts? Here are some facts that are worth noting:
- In crashes involving children under 14, less African
American children use seatbelts nationally than any other group.
- Hispanic children are less likely to use seatbelts than
any other group on a national level.
- Car crashes are the number one cause of death for children
between the ages of 1 and 12 in the U.S.
Patricia Salas Pineda, Group Vice President of National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation at Toyota Motor North America, explains, "At Toyota, we are strongly committed to the belief that everyone deserves to be safe. Through our educational outreach and partnerships with leading hospitals, nonprofits and research universities nationwide, Toyota is engaged extensively in programs that help ensure that drivers and passengers are safe at every stage of life. Buckle Up for Life is a vital commitment for Toyota, and we are proud to be working with these great medical centers to expand its reach."1
